Course Introduction
This course is aimed at ALL healthcare staff including bank and voluntary staff. It provides an overview of the Duty of Candour legislation which ensures that providers are open and transparent with people who use services. It sets out some specific requirements providers must follow when things go wrong with care and treatment, including informing people about the incident, providing reasonable support, providing truthful information and an apology when things go wrong.

Understand the statutory duty of candour for care organisations in the UK
Understand the importance of discussing the risks of procedures to patients before commencing treatment
Identify incidents of unexpected or unintended harm and how the duty of candour procedure should be applied
Outline monitoring and reporting requirements
Identify in what circumstances you need to apologise to a patient
Know when to speak to the patient and those close to them
Know what to do if the patient/ family do not want to know the details
How to provide support to the patient
Encourage a learning culture by accurately reporting errors
Recognise the GMC decision tool for raising and acting on concerns
