This advanced course will provide in-depth awareness and understanding of safeguarding people over the age of 16 who may have a temporary or permanent loss of capacity, with authorisation, and where Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) are followed. It is updated by legislative changes and codes of practice.

Understand the principles of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
Know the legal framework and how this relates to the Human Rights Act and Equalities legislation
Understand the criminal offence of ill treatment and wilful neglect
Understand the role of Power of Attorney
Understand the role of Advocates, family and friends
Understand the role of the Court of Protection
Understand the use of restrictions and restraint
Identify where deprivation of liberty may occur and the safeguards and legal responsibilities in such circumstances

This course aims to ensure that candidates have a thorough understanding of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) for England and Wales.
